The location maybe difficult to find due to the small wooden plank sign with "Ichi-ensou" written on it. If the letters were bolded might be noticeable. If you are looking for a place that is not just to "sleep", please consider this place. The dining room where the staff are kind by offering to take you around places and having dinner as a group to "break-the-ice". Their breakfast (500yen) meal is delicious with home-baked bread, yogurt, teacoffee, and egg.

This is probably one of the best places I have ever stayed. Beautiful, really clean, well-located. They were also very helpful and I had one of my best meals in Japan for a really moderate price. My only reservation is that the place can be a little bit cold during the winter but it didn't lower my satisfaction to stay there. If I go back to Kyoto someday, I will certainly book a bed at IchiEnSou

This was the best hostelling experience of my life. Yashi and Mike made us feel totally at home - Yashi went out with us for dinner on two nights, and on the third night we all made takoyaki in the hostel. These guys make the hostel what it is - warm, welcoming, and fun. They also make a great breakfast. The dorm rooms are spacious, and the house has a ton of character. It's like staying with a couple of great guys who are the ideal guesthouse owners.

Staying at Ichiensou is like living in Yashi's house. He cooked for us, took us out on the town, and always wanted to help us have a good time. The hostel is small, so it's like a homestay, but the rooms are large and immaculate. If you stay here, you will have a great time in Kyoto. Thanks to Yashi, Kenji, and Atashi Adrian & Jamie

This is one of the better places I have stayed in all my travels. The location is perfect, right close to bus stops, metro stations, food, everything that you could want. The owner Yashi is really a nice person, helpful, and takes great care of the place. If Im ever back in Kyoto this will be the place I will stay again, it was awesome!

Would have loved to hang out more with Yashi and Kenji. Comfortable place, feels like a home away from home.
